Job Description

This position is responsible for developing, recommending and implementing Codes and Standards that support products across the Leviton’s business units that design and manufacture all types of wiring devices.  This position is responsible for standards development, voluntary and regulatory compliance of both existing and new products through work with NRTLs, Standards Committee work, NEMA and other regulatory and government agencies in North America.  This position will interface with the legal department in support of intellectual property and product liability in support of overall company objectives.

Works directly with all corporate departments, including Business Unit leadership, and engineering laboratories in headquarters and manufacturing facilities.  Works with outside counsel as needed.   

Job Responsibilities:

  1. Works across multiple Business Units to understand strategies and provide advice on new product development efforts to ensure feasibility with regulatory guidelines and suggests, if necessary, alternate solutions to ensure compliance
  2. Develops and works to implement new Codes in support of Business Unit objectives
  3. Represents Leviton at industry meetings (i.e. UL, NEMA, NFPA, CSA and CANENA) 
  4. Interprets relevant standards and test requirements for new and existing products and works to ensure these are available internally or makes recommendations on outside resources
  5. Works with Leviton’s labs and factories to ensure necessary testing is in place to meet NRTL certification and ongoing compliance
  6. Represents the industry, and specifically Leviton’s business interests, on NEMA, CSA and UL Technical Committees and NEC panels
  7. Works to integrate standards across North America for both existing and new products
  8. Advises Business Units and legal department on regulatory trends, changes and considerations to ensure product acceptance is realized and preferred in local jurisdictions
  9. Works with internal and external legal counsel in support of product liability, intellectual property, and other legal actions 
  10. Actively participates in assessing concepts and participates in design reviews as required
  11. Provide input to several Business Unit strategies
  12. Supports analysis and response to complaints from outside parties including the US Consumer Product Safety Commission

Education & Experience:

  • A Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering, Masters (MS, MBA) or JD desirable (MS, MBA)
  • 10 years’ experience working with third party compliance and / or Standards organizations.  Experience in products central to Leviton’s businesses highly preferred
  • Thorough knowledge of worldwide Approvals processes
  • Extensive working knowledge of the Code making process including rules, regulations, and by laws.  Experience with the NFPA, UL, CSA, IEC, and NEMA

  • Ability to clearly articulate plans and influence others
  • Extremely well organized, capable of prioritizing, and willing to manage multiple tasks simultaneously while working in a matrixed environment

Travel:

  • Up to 20% travel; North America

Major Contacts:

  • Direct contact with all corporate departments and engineering laboratories in manufacturing facilities.  Additional outside contact with all approvals agencies (SDOs) including executives
  • This position regularly meets with Standards organizations developing, interpreting and defining product safety requirements
